Carnegie 10 International Film Series – In Between
In honor of the diversity of films from around the world and in homage to the indispensable Cinema 10 series of Potsdam, the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures & the Language Resource Center are pleased to present:
In Between (2017)
The film follows three young Palestinian women living together in an apartment in Tel Aviv: lawyer who liked to party Laila (Mouna Hawa) and DJ-chef-bartender lesbian Salma (Sana Jammelieh) are close friends whose tastes and attitudes mostly align, but into their lives comes Nur (Shaden Kanboura), a hijab-wearing, modest student from a conservative family. Her shy, nervous glances at their lifestyle speak not so much to her judgment, but to her curiosity. Together, the trio start to bond in unlikely ways.
The film chronicles how Layla, Salma and Nour try to be their true selves — ambitious, educated, sexually liberated — while caught between a conservative Palestinian culture and a more liberal Israeli state that does not see them as equals.
