Worksheet: Meeting with a Tutor

As an SLU student, you’ve been given a lot of resources—from the WORD Studio to the Counseling Center.  But it’s one thing to have the resources, and another thing to know how to use them.  That actually takes skill.  By filling out this worksheet before and after each meeting with a tutor, you’ll learn how to use tutors, and make the most of your time with that resource.

Pre-tutorial Worksheet (Complete Before You Meet With the Tutor).

This worksheet will help you be prepared and focused on going into the appointment.

  1.  On a scale of 1-10, how done/ready to be turned in is this assignment?
  2.  On a scale of 1-10, how confident do you feel about what you have to share today with your tutor? Please say what you feel good/not good about.
  3.  On a scale of 1-10, how do you feel about having someone look at your work today, if 1=super reluctant and 10=very eager to share my work? Please say why you feel that way.
  4.  What are the strengths of your work so far on this assignment?
  5.  What do you already know you need to do on this assignment?
  6.  What would be a good focus for your tutorial?  You can say “thesis,” “structure,” “source integration,” “citation,” “reading comprehension,” “grammar,” or anything else.
  7.  What do you want your tutor to know about you/your learning style before you begin working together?

Post-tutorial Worksheet (Complete After You Meet With the Tutor).

This reflection worksheet will help you actually help you make sense of the feedback you got, and apply it. In addition, it’ll help you see the lessons you need to learn to continue to improve as a student well into the future—after this semester. You can’t apply the lessons until you figure out what they are first!

  1.  Did you end up working on what you put above in #6? If not, why do you think that was?
  2. What did you learn about your own learning/composing process as a result of this tutorial? Is there any way you could tweak your composing process moving forward?
  3. What is the most important thing you need to do on this assignment—the ultimate step that will really improve your work on this assignment?
  4. What is the very next thing you’re going to do on this assignment towards this ultimate step?
  5. How could you have been better prepared for this tutorial?
  6. What words of encouragement could you give yourself as you move into future tutorials?
