Questions to Ask – and Annotate

  • Highlight notable aspects and elements of the image.
  • Who produced the image? Why?
  • What do the various parts of the image mean?
  • Who is the image intended for?
  • What are the distinguishing features of the image?
  • What does the image conceal?
  • Is the image an accurate representation?
  • What does the image “argue”? Is it convincing?
  • Are there parts of the image you don’t understand?

Image Analysis Process

Observations

Describe the following elements within the image:

  • People/Animals
     
  • Objects
     
  • Activities

Inferences

  • What is happening in the image?
     
  • Where is it from?
     
  • When is it from?
     
  • Why was it created? 

Inquiry

  • Write a question that is left unanswered by the image.

  • What did you find out from this image that you might not learn anywhere else?

  • What other documents, photographs, or historical evidence would you need to further understand this event or topic
