New Acquisition, Letter by Absalom Graves Gaines
Gaines was St. Lawrence University’s third president, and the speaker he settled on in February of 1879 was an attorney named Vasco P. Abbott (whose son is a namesake of the Abbott-Young Beta Temple). We know this because we have recently acquired the letter of invitation—interesting not only because of the invitation, but President Gaines sketches out his rationale for wanting Mr. Abbott to visit campus. What we have is a short document about Gaines’ thinking on what the liberal arts means, circa 1879. It is also on some wonderful stationery that lists the entire faculty at the time! (Not a lot of them). This is part of our archival file on President Gaines and which is open to the SLU Community and to the public for inspection.
