Accessing SLU Windows Desktop from a Computer


Faculty, staff and students can access a Windows PC from a computer or mobile device with Internet access by going to SLU Windows Desktop is perfect for accessing applications that are Windows-only or that you do not have installed on your computer.

Example Scenario 1: Obidiah is a student at St. Lawrence. He needs to use SPSS for an assignment, but he'd prefer to use his laptop rather than a lab computer on campus. Obidiah can use SLU Windows Desktop to work with SPSS from his laptop in the comfort of his room.

Example Scenario 2: Miriam is an instructor at St. Lawrence. She needs access to a Windows desktop, but is travelling with her iPad. Miriam can access the a Windows desktop from her iPad by connecting to SLU Windows Desktop via the VMware Horizon View Client app, available for download in the iTunes app store.


Option 1: Using an application

If you plan to use the virtual desktop regularly, install the VMware Horizon View Client. The View Client is an application dedicated to accessing SLU Windows Desktop. It can offer better performance and additional features such as allowing you to access your computer's hardware from the virtual desktop (e.g. a USB flash drive or Webcam). You only need to install the application once.

  1. Open a Web browser and go to
  2. Select Install the VMware Horizon View Client to be directed to a site with download options
  3. Find your operating system and select Go to Downloads
  4. Download and install the application
  5. When prompted to enter the name of the connection server, enter
  6. Click Connect
  7. Enter your St. Lawrence username and password and click Log in
  8. Double click Windows 7 Lab to connect to the virtual desktop.

For future connections, open the VMware application and log in to connect to the desktop.

Option 2: Using your Web browser

Use VMware Horizon View HTML Access to access SLU Windows Desktop from your Web browser. It offers quick and easy access (no install required) to a Windows desktop and all applications, but lacks the features of the client.

Use this option for sporadic access to SLU Windows Desktop, or if you’re using a computer that is not your own.

  1. Open a Web browser and go to
  2. Select VMware Horizon View HTML Access
  3. Enter your St. Lawrence network credentials and click Log in
  4. Click Windows 7 Lab to connect to the virtual desktop.
