Global Studies senior and professor present at Geography Conference

Rutendo Chabikwa ’17 and Madeleine Wong, associate professor and chair of global studies, presented a paper at the Annual Conference of the American Association of Geographers (April 5-9) in Boston. The title of their paper was “#FeesMustFall: Engaging Youth Subjectivities in South Africa.”

Rutendo, from Harare, Zimbabwe, is an international student and a  UWC Davis Scholar who went to UWC Pearson in Canada.  Rutendo and Dr. Wong presented on the analysis of a research project they conducted in South Africa in the summer of 2016 – interviewing South African university students about the student protests of 2015 and 2016. This project was funded by the St. Lawrence University Center for International and Intercultural Studies (CIIS) Fellows Program award, which provides funding for faculty members and students to pursue research outside the regular academic year and share an experience of working together in a different cultural setting. According to Rutendo, “the conference taught me that there are no limits to what one can study and research; that, in fact, a lot of what is going on in the world is important to academic conversations. With that in mind, it is important that Africa produces more academics from the continent, generating knowledge and information rooted in the African context.”
