Costa Rica
May 22-30, 2012
Visiting Assistant Professor David Kratzmann led a small group of students to Costa Rica to investigate recent volcanism and volcanic deposits. Plans to enter the three craters that make up the summit of Turrialba were dashed as the volcano was actively venting at the time and local authorities raised the alert level from Green to Yellow (eruption possible in days, weeks, or months). The group observed deposits surrounding Volcán Turrialba and reached the summits of Volcán Poás and Volcán Irazú. Several cultural locations were visited as well, including Guayabo National Monument (largest archaeological site in the country) and the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles (in Cartago).
