Prof. Brook Henkel presents on filmmaker Fritz Lang at GSA Conference

Brook Henkel, Assistant Professor of German and Film Studies, recently presented new research on director Fritz Lang at the annual German Studies Association conference in Portland, Oregon, October, 3-6, 2019. His talk “Mabuse Returns: Fritz Lang, Exile, and Postwar Visions of Nowhere” newly rereads Lang’s final film, The Thousand Eyes of Dr. Mabuse (1960), as a profound reflection on the radically changed urban spaces and media environment of postwar West Berlin. The image of Berlin in the film, he argues, owes both to Lang’s personal experiences of WWII exile and return, as well as the influence of Hollywood film noir aesthetics.
