"Is this for a grade?" - Exploring Alternatives to Traditional Grading
with Dr. Daniel M. Look, Rutherford Professor of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics
Grades, and the process of grading, are disliked by students and professors alike. Yet grading is considered necessary in higher education. What are the objectives of grading and are there other ways to meet these objectives? In this talk, Dr. Look will discuss some alternative approaches, adapted from humanities and writing courses, that he is using for his mathematics courses at St. Lawrence with the intent of re-centering assessment away from grades and toward increasing student knowledge.
