Tedford Receives Travel Grant

Catherine Tedford, director of the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery at St. Lawrence University, is the recipient of a 2013 research visit grant from the German Academic Exchange Service. The grant will support her travel to Berlin, where she will work on her research project "Contemporary Street Art Stickers in the United States and Germany." "Berlin," as Ms. Tedford points out, "is home to a lively street art culture" and is a global city where "street art stickers, or simply ‘stickers,' have emerged as a vehicle for self-expression and as an effective way to engage passersby. Stickers may be used to "tag" or claim a space and make it temporarily one's own, to announce events, to publicize blogs or other social media sites, or to offer social commentary and political critique."

Ms. Tedford's travel grant will allow her to spend a month in Berlin focusing on the development of a traveling international exhibition and digital image archive of contemporary street art stickers from the United States and Germany. She will work in collaboration with Oliver Baudach, the founder and director of Berlin's Hatch Kingdom, the world's first museum devoted to sticker art.
