Experimental filmmaking at AAH

This semester Visiting Assistant Professor Sarah Smith is teaching an experimental filmmaking and video art class. This class is grounded in the idea of making handmade films by working directly on celluloid. Since January students have been working on two different films, a hand-painted film and a found footage film. In their first films they worked by painting, scratching, and manipulating the surface of 16mm celluloid. Students have learned the logistics of working directly on the film surface and how to operate 16mm projectors so the films can be viewed and then digitally transferred. Coming back from Spring Break the students will begin the next stage of experimental filmmaking which will include having them shoot directly on Super8 cameras and then digitally edit their films in Final Cut Pro.
