St. Lawrence fields 35 intercollegiate sports and is a member of the Liberty League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Administrators and coaches are engaged in an intensive ongoing dialog at all levels to prepare for the resumption of athletics when it is safe to do so and pending guidelines from New York State.
Response Plan and Guidelines
Over the summer, Athletics developed a COVID-19 Response Plan for compliance with league and conference guidance when it is same to resume gameplay. It includes a communications plan for athletes. It entails new guidelines for Sports Medicine in the Athletic Training Room, guidelines for educating our student-athletes, guidelines for positive COVID-19 testing with a student-athlete, policies and procedures for Strength and Conditioning, policies and procedures for the Fitness Center, return to work guidelines, team locker room guidelines, a phased return to sport guidelines, Sports Information press box guidelines, and working guidelines for a positive COVID-19 test amongst coaches and staff. More decisions lie ahead in determining schedules and facilities use, and a resource page will be developed for the web site.
Athletics will affect a phased approach to full participation with each of its teams to limit high-risk exposure initially. Increased contact over time would be expected. This approach will help to mitigate any positive COVID-19 cases and help with contact tracing in the event of a positive COVID-19 case.
As of November 9, the Liberty League announced that all league competition and championships for winter sports are canceled due to the evolving COVID-19 pandemic.
At St. Lawrence, we plan to have as many winter sports teams as possible participate in practices and intra-squad activities. We will also consider the potential for some intercollegiate scrimmages or competitions later in the winter season with limited regional opponents if public health conditions permit.
Division I Hockey: St. Lawrence still intends to play Division I hockey this year. While ECAC Hockey continues to discuss the best path forward, we are attempting to coordinate non-conference competitions. While we don't anticipate that fans will be allowed due to public health protocols, we will stream our home games on ESPN+.
Other Winter Sports Leagues: The College Squash Association, the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association, and the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association have not decided about winter sports. It is important to understand that some of our opponents have already canceled all winter athletic competition.
Spring Sports: We are hopeful that public health conditions will allow our participation in spring sports. As of November 9, these discussions have not yet started.
