Brezault co-chaired Modern Language Association Symposium Panel

Prof. Éloïse Brezault co-chaired a panel at the Modern Language Association Symposium in Lisbon last July on “Traces-mémoires, Bodies and Ruins: Impossible Memorialization of the Past.” She presented her new research on the metaphoric meanings of ruins in postcolonial African cities and their relationships to memory. Her paper was entitled: “From Lubumbashi to Kinshasa, the rhizomes of the pierced cities in two Congolese novels: From colonial ruins to postcolonial mines.”

She questions how empire’s ruins still carve the social fabric of postcolonial cities in Aanza and Mwanza’s latest books.
