Take a Time Out of Your Day at Time Out Cafe
There are a lot of things I love about St. Lawrence. I could write about so many different aspects of this school that have made SLU a second home for me over the past three years, but one thing that stands out is my love of eating food on this campus (because I love eating food in general). When I think about the amazing food that SLU has to offer, the first thing that comes to mind is my personal favorite lunch spot on campus: the Time Out Café.
Time Out Café, or the “Newell Café,” is located above the Newell Field House in the athletics facility and serves lunch from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on weekdays. It offers a variety of sandwiches and soups, along with the best chocolate chip cookies that I have ever tasted (on campus we call these “Pub cookies”). Let me be the first to tell you that you have not lived until you've eaten the chicken salad with grapes on pita bread. On top of the amazing food, I am always greeted with a smile when I place my order and can count on the friendly staff to say hi to me and instantly make my day better, just with a simple hello. When I was first making my college decision, the dining services on campus certainly played a role in where I would end up, but I never imagined how much I would enjoy all of the delicious food options that SLU has to offer, not just in Newell, but all over campus as well.
How much do I got out of my way to eat the food at Newell? There’s that one time time when I inhaled a Pub cookie 20 minutes before tennis practice (not my smartest decision), or when I ran from my dorm to Newell in the pouring rain when I could have walked a much shorter distance to another eating establishment on campus. On other days, I simply find myself stopping at Newell immediately after my morning classes as a way to relax and regroup for the afternoon. These are only a few examples of how Time Out has become a ritual part of my week that I cherish, not just because of the food but because of the opportunity it gives me to catch up with friends.
Time Out also holds a special place in my heart because it was the very first place that I ate when I came to campus for the first time as a junior in high school four years ago. Since then, I have eaten lunch there more times than I could possibly count, with many different people and for many different reasons. It is just one part of what has made my entire St. Lawrence experience so unforgettable, and I can be certain that when I make my first trip back to Canton as an alumna, I will be sure to make a stop at Time Out.
