Dear St. Lawrence Class of 2019
Dear Class of 2019,
Welcome to St. Lawrence University! We are all so excited that you have decided to become a Laurentian for Life.
You know where you will be living, what FYP you have been placed into, and probably have begun packing boxes upon boxes of things to go in your dorm. You may have studied the campus map, looked up study tips, or pinned dorm room ideas on Pinterest. As you go through your first semester at St. Lawrence, you will learn to adjust to life here on campus and find out why so many Laurentians call St. Lawrence their home away from home. To give you a head start on a successful first semester, here are four things I hope you remember:
1. You are not the only new student.
You might feel like you are the only person trying to figure out where your classes are or how to work the public printing. However, there is an entire freshmen class that is new to campus and trying to adjust to life at SLU with you. Don’t worry about sticking out or being embarrassed if you don’t know how to do something! Just ask for help because all of us were freshmen at one point.
2. You will not be able to do absolutely everything.
College is a great time to find new passions and interests, but you won’t be able to do everything that looks fun. Join a club (or two or three) but don’t overwhelm yourself by taking on too much at once. Try out a few clubs your first semester and try adding more in the spring if you feel like you can handle it (there is a Club and Organization Fair every fall and spring!). No one wants to miss out on any of the fun, but if you are overworked you won’t be able to enjoy any of your activities.
3. You will make hundreds of memories within your first week.
Matriculation, learning the names of everyone living on your floor, your first day of classes, and the FYP Cup day are just a few of the activities that you will be doing during your first week here at St. Lawrence. You will probably be tired and possibly a little homesick, but go into these activities with a positive outlook because they have been planned to help you get to know SLU and your new classmates. Plus, these will be memories from SLU that you will never forget!
4. You should try out multiple study spots out before you pick a favorite.
Every student learns and studies a little differently so try out a couple of study spots before deciding what your go-to location is. St. Lawrence offers tons of study spots: ODY, lounges, your dorm room, the student center, and so many more. Give each of them a fair chance. (My favorites are the third floor of the student center and the café in Brewer Bookstore.)
Welcome to St. Lawrence, Class of 2019. I can’t wait to see you on campus at the end of August!
