I get asked all the time: “Why SLU?” “What made you decide to come here?” Quite frankly, I knew absolutely nothing about SLU when I decided that I wanted to come here. I didn’t know anything about academics, social life, athletics, or residential life.
The St. Lawrence Blog
Who is St. Lawrence University? We are a group of people with countless adventures and even more stories. The St. Lawrence Blog gives our students, faculty and staff the chance to tell their tales, in their own words and in their own way. Sharing these anecdotes in one place gives our community the chance to show how creative, daring and passionate we are about what we do. Alone, these stories are powerful; together they define St. Lawrence.

Surviving an Outdoor Major as an Indoor Kid
A ladybug scared me on the van ride back to St. Lawrence. To give myself some credit, there were multiple ladybugs and they were all very active. Every time I flinched, I apologized profusely to the rest of the geology lab students in the van.
The Zen Garden: The Fruit of a Class Vision
It’s not hard to find a peaceful spot on the St. Lawrence campus. I’ve spent countless afternoons beneath autumn-tinged trees, or reclined in an Adirondack chair on the quad, spending quiet moments to let the North County beauty sink in.
Growing Up at Canaras
For as long as I can remember, St. Lawrence has always been my community.
No Typical SLU Student
As an Admissions Ambassador at St. Lawrence, I get asked a lot of questions on campus tours. Often times, the questions are straightforward and my answers come quickly and confidently. But there is one question that stumps me every time: "So what is a 'typical SLU student' like?"
The Body Pride Project: More than Appearances
I love my lips. I was born in China with a cleft lip and when I was younger, other kids would ask me, “What’s wrong with your lips?” These comments hurt but I realized that the scars simply reinforce the luck, stories and love that guide my life.
Top 10 Tour Spots: How Many Did You See?
One of my favorite parts about being an Admissions Ambassador at St. Lawrence is going on tour and sharing my SLU experience with prospective students and their families.
Admissions Summer Internship!
When I first signed up to be an admissions ambassador in the spring of 2013, I had no idea how much I would come to love the work I did.
The Best Dana Dinner
It's Tuesday night. My stomach groans in anticipation as I make the trek across campus to Dana Dining Hall. My pace quickens as I get closer. Tonight is not just any normal dinner. It is the best night of the week. It is Pasta Sauté Night.
Secret Study Spots
As a student, I understand how important it is to find the best study spot on campus. For some that may be a quite nook in the library, or your own bedroom. For me, it's the loud area that is the Student Center.
Body Beautiful Week: A Personal Story
“Body Beautiful Week: Love Your Body!” encourages a dialogue on campus about body image, healthy eating and eating disorders. I believe wholeheartedly in starting these discussions about eating disorders—not the kind in magazines or on reality TV shows, but the real-life kind that changes the lives of students on campus. Students like me.
A Day at the Mountain
Most weekends, my friends and I like to go skiing in the beautiful Adirondacks. Early in the morning, we all pile into my friend's Volvo with all of our gear and drive into the sunrise.
Apple'town' - More Than Just a Hockey Rink
On any given Saturday night, the siren rings and the student section roars; the Skating Saints have won another game! Appleton Arena: a North Country gem that local Canton community members and students migrate to every Friday and Saturday night during the winter.
