The St. Lawrence Blog

Who is St. Lawrence University? We are a group of people with countless adventures and even more stories. The St. Lawrence Blog gives our students, faculty and staff the chance to tell their tales, in their own words and in their own way. Sharing these anecdotes in one place gives our community the chance to show how creative, daring and passionate we are about what we do. Alone, these stories are powerful; together they define St. Lawrence.

While I was in the process of applying for college, I had a few concerns about St. Lawrence University. Since my parents both attended SLU, I grew up in a house where St. Lawrence was mentioned frequently.

This past summer began with two things: an idea and stubbornness. The idea, to live in a van converted into a camper and travel the West Coast seeking the best in rock climbing, was the brainchild of Jace Mullen ’17.

Being a senior, I find myself reflecting on my childhood a lot. You’re caught in this limbo of “in less than a year I’m going to be an adult” and “one more year to just be a kid.” In my reflection on childhood, I always remembered how excited I was to learn about anything.

A digital countdown to school starting

As Summer 2016 comes to a close, my excitement to get back to St. Lawrence grows daily. Though always an enthusiastic student before becoming a Laurentian, I had never experienced or witnessed such a large group of students spending the summer counting down the days until school starts.

We are all nomads. But I am not simply pigeon-holing the word ‘nomad’ to mean people looking for a new place to live. No, not at all. I’m referring to those wandering souls looking for a new place to cleanse their soul. Probably not that deep.

So you’re thinking about classes, majors and your future. Well, maybe not the last two just yet but it’s that time for you to decide what type of classes you want to take. If you’re a science, biology or chemistry student then you’re in the right place.

The summer months for any St. Lawrence student can easily be categorized by what month it is. For upperclassmen, May is the period of exhaustion and recuperation after taking finals, moving out, and saying goodbye to friends who are graduating.
