What is the Augsbury/North Country Scholarship?
The Augsbury/North Country Scholarship is a financial award, initiated in 1974, to recognize academic and co-curricular leadership among designated North Country and Canadian high school students. These students have demonstrated leadership, community service, and a strong academic commitment, as well as a sincere desire to attend St. Lawrence University. This prestigious scholarship includes a $27,000 annual merit scholarship and a competitive financial aid package if a scholar has demonstrated financial need greater than the amount of the scholarship. It is required that Augsbury/North Country Scholars will maintain a minimum cumulative 3.0 grade point average throughout their four years at St. Lawrence. If a student is nominated for the scholarship, and is admitted but is not designated an Augsbury/North Country Scholar, a minimum scholarship of $18,000 will be awarded, regardless of financial need.
Who is eligible to nominate potential Augsbury/North Country Scholars?
The scholarship is available to students attending 107 high schools. Eighteen Canadian schools (in Ontario and Quebec) and 89 New York high schools located in the area we designate as the North Country are eligible to submit nominees for this scholarship. The list of eligible schools can be found here. Click here for our online nomination form.
What are the nomination options and guidelines?
The nomination deadline is July 15. All designated Augsbury/North Country Scholarship schools will have the option of nominating up to two students for consideration for this scholarship. Schools should only nominate two students in cases where there are two interested students who are equally well-qualified. Each nominee will compete against the overall pool of candidates rather than directly against another student from the same school. Nominees from New York schools must be a US citizen or US permanent resident and must have a cumulative grade point average of 90 or higher at the end of six semesters in a challenging curriculum. The GPA can be rounded to the nearest whole integer (89.5 or higher before rounding) at the end of the sixth semester. Please wait until the final semester is completed to nominate students unless there is confidence the spring grades will not result in a lower cumulative GPA than required. Nominees from Canadian schools must be Canadian citizens and must have a cumulative grade point average of 90 or better after six semesters in a challenging curriculum. As international applicants, Canadian nominees are also required to submit SAT scores.
What is Augsbury/North Country Scholar Day?
Augsbury/North Country Scholar Day is a special event to which only nominated students, their guests and high school counselors are invited. The program will be hosted in September and includes information on academic and co-curricular opportunities, admissions and financial aid information, a campus tour and a luncheon. School officials who have nominated students attending the event will also be invited to participate in lunch that day.
When must an Augsbury/North Country Scholarship nominee apply for admission?
In order to be considered for the scholarship, nominated students must apply to St. Lawrence University by completing the Common Application online no later than December 1. The application fee is waived for all nominees. All supporting information (transcript, letters of recommendation, etc.) must be submitted by December 1 as well. The Admissions Selection Committee will send decision letters to all candidates in mid-December. Click here for a checklist of important dates.
Students who are interested in applying for additional scholarships must complete and submit scholarship materials no later than December 1. Each student can only be awarded one merit scholarship. If a student was to qualify for more than one, the scholarship with the greatest dollar value will be awarded.
If a student is nominated, applies, and is accepted to St. Lawrence University, is the student committed to attend?
Students who are admitted and named Augsbury/North Country Scholars will have until May 1 to make their enrollment decisions. We certainly hope that most will choose to enroll at St. Lawrence, but understand that students may have other options to consider. The only exception is that any Augsbury/North Country nominee who applies early decision will be making a commitment to attend if admitted.
When will students receive their financial aid packages?
Students interested in being considered for financial aid in addition to the merit scholarship must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) with the US Department of Education's processing center between between October 1 and February 1. Notification of financial aid will be sent with the admissions decision provided the student has submitted the FAFSA and all required documents. Early decision candidates who complete their financial aid paperwork will be sent their financial aid award with their decision letter according to the early decision schedule.
Please feel free to contact our office with any questions about the program.
