Director, Outdoor Studies & Adirondack Semester
Adirondack Semester 2018 has begun! This is the 19th year of the popular and highly successful Adirondack Semester’s existence and we are pleased to welcome this year’s cohort of “Arcadians” (the yurt village is called Arcadia).
The semester began at Catamount Lodge where students prepared for the opening expedition- a 6 day canoe adventure in the Adirondacks that will end at Massawepie Lake, on the shore of which is Arcadia. They will spend the semester at Arcadia until Thanksgiving and then will explore a short internship and the semester will conclude with their final presentations back at Catamount Lodge.
To prepare for the canoe expedition, the student separated their expedition from Arcadia gear, learned to pack the canoe barrels and operate the cook stoves and reviewed the route with the Assistant Directors, Kim and Will (both highly qualified outdoor educators and alumni of the program).
While at Catamount the student also met their instructors and professors for the semester, learned to bind beautiful, hand-made paper journals to be used in one class and began the semester-long process of creating and maintaining a positive learning environment and close-knit community.
On Saturday morning we drove to Racquette Lake, unloaded the canoes, chose properly fitting PFD’s and paddles and posed for a group photo before launching on the first of many adventures which will become treasured ADK Semester memories. Please enjoy these and the photos/updates to come!
The next weekly update installment will appear in a week or so and after that the rest will be authored by the students themselves.
