Faculty Café: External Threats to Academic Freedom
Sykes Formal Lounge

Friday, March 1st  -  4:00 pm

Colleges and universities increasingly find themselves needing to prepare for cases of organized external threats against faculty members whose work as scholars and/or public speech touch on divisive political issues. Many such cases, including one involving a St. Lawrence alumnus, have drawn national attention and sparked broader conversations about academic freedom in the age of social media and intense political polarization. An important element of these cases is the question of how institutions should respond when faculty members are targeted. This Faculty Café will feature remarks by Dr. Dana Cloud, a professor of rhetoric and communications at Syracuse University who was herself a target of external threats in 2017. In addition, Karl Schonberg will speak about ongoing efforts at St. Lawrence to address these issues, and John Collins will speak about his own experience of external harassment in response to his scholarship and his public advocacy for Palestinian rights.

All faculty and staff members are encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be served.
