Director of the Writing Center

Dr. Hillory Oakes directs the Munn Writing Center and oversees the satellite writing centers. She supervises and trains the First-Year Program mentors and conducts in-class workshops on faculty request. Dr. Oakes received her Ph.D. in English with a concentration in Composition Theory and Rhetoric from the University of Denver.

Her scholarly interests include neo-expressivism, John Steinbeck, documentary film, and autobiography and memoir. She recently composed the companion website for Patsy Callaghan and Ann Dobyns's textbook, A Meeting of Minds.

Along with her administrative duties, Dr. Oakes is also a faculty member. While at St. Lawrence, she has taught courses in Expository Writing, American Literature, Reading and Writing Autobiography, and Responding to Writing (an introduction to composition theory and tutor training course). In the fall of 2004, she will begin teaching in the First-Year Program.
