Before coming to St. Lawrence, Rachel Henderson had never been
to the East Coast region. During her college tour, she found
that St. Lawrence was different from the others she had visited. “When
I walked into Admissions, they asked for my name, not my Social
Security number,” she recalls. “I wasn’t just
another number to them.”
English professors Natalia Singer and Paul Graham and Viebranz
Visiting Professor of Creative Writing John Daniel have all had
an impact on Rachel’s plans to become a writer. In summer
2005, she worked with Graham, writing short fiction for her English
fellowship. She will continue it as a senior honors project,
hoping to compile a book before she graduates.
Elsewhere on campus, Rachel enjoys membership in Kappa Delta
Sigma. “My sorority has given me friends and relationships
I couldn’t have gotten anywhere else,” she explains.
Rachel also likes working in University communications, where
she has always found support. “The people in the office
are interested in my goals and what I’m achieving; they
make the job fun,” she says.
A rising senior, one thing Rachel will remember the most is the
people of St. Lawrence. “It’s incredible the way I’ve
been able to build close relationships not only with my classmates
and friends, but also with my professors and work supervisors,” she
says. “I love that about St. Lawrence; it makes every aspect
personal.”
