| Shaun Whitehead
Associate Chaplain
When Chicago native Shaun Whitehead answered the call to the ministry,
she had never heard of Canton or St. Lawrence University. She enrolled
in theology school after 14 years in radio broadcasting, and received
her Master of Divinity degree from McCormick Theological Seminary
in Chicago in 2003. St. Lawrence is her first appointment.
Whitehead is the Women’s Resource Center’s co-advisor
with Judith DeGroat, coordinator of gender studies. She is also
worship leader of the progressive Christian Worship Community,
which fosters the Christian ideals of hospitality to all people
and holds regular Sunday worship services in Gunnison Memorial
Chapel. Additionally, she is co-director of the Gospel Choir with
Barry Torres, director of music ensembles.
“To be a part of gospel music in this place is very meaningful,” she
says. “The Gospel is good news, and lifting it in song is a
blessing. Plus, singing unites people. When we sing, we're on common
ground seeking healing from the universe.”
Whitehead is seeking ordination in the United Church of Christ. She says
she is attracted to its emphasis on unity and equality.
Whitehead says she appreciates the small-town feel of Canton , where she has
acquired a new hobby, bird-watching. Speaking of St. Lawrence, she says, “It
is the gift of my life, but I knew I needed to prepare for a different environment
when a former co-worker asked, ‘Hey, Shaun. Do you have your snowshoes
yet?’”
