| James C. Shuman
Associate Professor and Chair of the Education Department
Jim Shuman’s resume covers a 30-year career in education,
including high school teaching, working as a museum educator, and
teaching in various colleges and universities. He came to St. Lawrence
in 1989.
“
I really like the continuing opportunity to work with bright young
people who want to enter the teaching profession,” Shuman
says. “I especially like the fact that St. Lawrence prepares
teachers who are liberally educated. It is a fundamental part of
my philosophy.”
Shuman’s work goes beyond the classroom and off the St. Lawrence
campus. “I’ve been working with the public schools
and professors of neighboring colleges to develop masters-level
and doctoral-level programs in educational leadership for the region,” Shuman
says. He looks to involve college students increasingly with local
schools to encourage struggling learners and further enhance the
local education system.
He is also leading a steering committee in planning a symposium
on North Country education that, he said, “holds considerable
promise for bringing local leaders together annually.”
Shuman served on the executive board of the New York State Association
for Teacher Educators, including a term as president, in the 1990s.
He received his B.A from Carleton College and his M.S. and Ph.D.
from the University of West Virginia.
