Assistant
Professor of Fine Arts
“What’s not to like about St. Lawrence?” says
Melissa Schulenberg. “I knew I wanted to teach at a small,
private liberal arts school,” she says as she enters her
third year on the faculty.
Schulenberg earned her undergraduate degree at Bowdoin College,
her MA at Purdue University, and her MFA at the University of Colorado/Boulder.
She then taught at Boulder, and at Grinnell College in Iowa. “I
realized after teaching mandatory art classes in graduate school
that I really enjoyed teaching art, and decided to become a professor,” says
Schulenberg.
At St. Lawrence, Schulenberg teaches studio courses such as Printmaking,
Drawing, a book-making class, and Introduction to Studio Art. She
enjoys them all, but for her own artwork, her preferred medium
is printmaking. “I often go out into the woods and look for
artifacts to incorporate into my art,” says Schulenberg.
“I think the fine arts department at St. Lawrence is at
the start of a very big stage of transition,” says Schulenberg. “The
upcoming facilities renovations are going to be very exciting and
rewarding once they’re finished.”
