 Carolyn E. Johns
Associate professor of environmental studies

Carrie Johns earned her B.A. at Colby College in biology and her Ph.D. at the University of Montana in botany. She teaches courses in air quality, pollution of aquatic ecosystems, and green backlash, among others. With research interests in the environmental effects of trace metal contamination and biological monitoring of pollutants, she is undertaking a comparative assessment of the bioaccumulation of copper, cadmium, and zinc by two related species of introduced mussels at seven sites along the upper St. Lawrence River. She will then assess the utility of a bio-kinetic model for predicting cadmium concentrations in each species.

Kara Kushmerek ’02 says, “I am constantly challenged by Carrie. She is one of the most amazing professors I’ve had here. She is always willing to teach new skills and enhance your understanding of the subject matter at hand.”

Heidi Marsella ’02 says, “Carrie is truly an inspirational professor for me. Her knowledge of the subject matter she teaches amazes me. She also lives her life actively, promoting the goals and concepts she teaches. There are few people you meet in a lifetime who will make a lasting impression on you but Carrie is one of those.”
