| Evelyn Jennings
Assistant
Professor of History/Margaret Vilas Chair
“I feel lucky to be able to work at something I truly enjoy,” says
Evelyn Jennings. She has always enjoyed working with students,
and feels at home in St. Lawrence’s small liberal arts college
environment. “There’s a lot of interaction with students
because of the relatively small class sizes,” she says. “And
the advantage of being the Latin studies specialist in the history
department is that I can design my own curricula and teach whatever
I want.”
A native of Rochester, N.Y., Jennings received a B.A. in Spanish
language and literatures from SUNY Oswego, and spent a year in
Spain. She received an M.A. in Modern Latin America from SUNY Stony
Brook. Putting her studies on hold, she moved back to Rochester
to start a family. She taught Spanish at a community college in
Rochester for 10 years before entering the doctoral program at
the University of Rochester. In 2001 she earned her Ph.D. in modern
European history with a focus on Spanish colonialism. She held
a visiting professorship at SUNY Brockport before coming to St.
Lawrence in 2002.
Having studied in both Spain and Cuba , Jennings is a strong advocate
of study abroad programs, saying they are “one of the best
things a liberal arts student can do.” She admires the strong
support and funding St. Lawrence gives to its international study
programs, and expresses her wish that more students would take advantage
of “such a wonderful opportunity.” |
