Facilities
Manager
As the facilities manager for St. Lawrence’s athletics complex,
Greek houses and theme cottages, and public spaces including Gulick
Theatre and the bookstore, Voss Fernandes has his crew of 21 work
to make the facilities that students live, play, and work in some
of the best in the country.
Fernandes has acted as a liaison between contractors and faculty
and staff for the major renovations that have occurred in these
areas. His work helped to create three new squash courts and a
new field house. Fernandes also headed last summer’s refurbishment
of residences along Park Street and University Avenue.
His next project is the expansion of the arts into space that
until recently housed the student union. He says, “Meeting
people from so many different areas has given me an appreciation
of what St. Lawrence has to offer. Every department is important.”
Fernandes says he loves being a member of the campus and Canton
communities. Like many other Canton residents, he takes pride in
the Skating Saints, St. Lawrence’s hockey teams. “I
make and paint the ice in Appleton Arena as an NHL-Certified Ice
Technician (CIT). It’s funny--before I moved here I had never
seen ice, except for the stuff that comes out of the freezer,” the
Hawaiian jokes. “Now I make it for a Division I hockey team.”
Fernandes also coaches Pee Wee football and basketball. He says, “I’ve
been coaching for 32 years. It’s therapy for me to spend
time with young athletes and their parents. It was my interest
in athletics that motivated me to take the job as athletics facilities
manager.” |
