| Joe Erlichman
Assistant Professor of Biology
Joe Erlichman earned both his BS and MS at the University of Colorado
at Boulder, then received his Ph.D. from Dartmouth Medical School.
He has been a postdoctoral fellow at Dartmouth Medical School as
well as a research associate there and at Wright State School of
Medicine in Dayton, Ohio.
Erlichman offers courses in comparative
vertebrate morphology and human biology.
His current area of research is the brain cell glia in normal
neuronal function and if it relates to the ability to regulate
a variety
of chemicals accessible to the neurons. His National Science
Foundation grant is focused on examining the role of glia in
a region of the
brain involved in the regulation of breathing. Using live brain
tissue and fluorescence microscopy, he is investigating how glia
regulates the level of acidity in the region of the brain known
as the medulla.
Erlichman has had his work published in the American
Journal of Physiology and Applied Physiology.
Jenna Greenleaf ’02 says, “Joe Erlichman
is the type of professor everyone wishes they had. He's upbeat and humorous,
as well as truly dedicated
and passionate about what he does. He's shown me that I have strong scientific
ability and has shared his intense knowledge, regarding both life and science.”
John
Trentini ’03 says, “Joe is a dynamic person with a contagious
smile. His passion for neuroscience has inspired me. He teaches complex material
in a way that hits home, and that I can relate to. Above all, he proves to
be a valuable friend,
offering honest, open-hearted advice and constructive advisement.”
