Anna Burke had the opportunity of a lifetime last summer. “I
traveled by University van across the country to North Dakota
with one of my professors and a fellow geology student,” she
says. “We stayed there for a month, and I assisted in paleobotany
research at the Hell Creek Formation. It was such a wonderful
opportunity to travel farther West than I had ever been and to
participate in geological digs with professionals.” In
addition to the work, she says, “We attended a Sioux Indian
pow-wow, visited the Badlands, camped, hiked and found everything
from dinosaur bones to a rodeo.”
This is just one of the many opportunities that St. Lawrence
offers that Burke has taken advantage of, including those in
sports, leadership, music and outdoor activities in the Adirondack
and North Country areas. As a senior who is about to graduate,
though, she is not too certain about leaving Canton behind. “The
future is an unknown subject at the moment,” she says. “I
am a little scared about leaving the St. Lawrence bubble and
entering the real world. However, my professors and the career
services staff have been wonderful about helping me figure out
what my next move will be.”
