| Jon Wheeler ‘80
Hometown: Syracuse, NY (currently living in West Hartford, Ct.)
Professional title: President of J.P Wheeler and Associates
Jon Wheeler comes from a long line of St. Lawrence graduates. “There
was just this great fit between myself and the campus; I felt I
could be myself and I loved the sense of community,” he says
of his decision to follow in the family footsteps.
Jon studied the natural sciences and majored in chemistry, but
he also loved the humanities courses he took. He was a student
government senator and an officer in his fraternity, Sigma Alpha
Epsilon. He was also helped winterize North Country homes of disadvantaged
people and played many intramural sports.
Jon values the strong and long –lasting friendships he made
while at St. Lawrence. “The classroom experience and the
inspirational professors in various departments are key to making
St. Lawrence the ultimate liberal arts experience. The work I did
at St. Lawrence was mind- expanding and enabling; it gave me an
opportunity to explore new ideas and issues,” he says.
After
graduation, Jon was hired by IBM in a marketing/consulting position,
and remained with the company for 15 years. Currently,
Jon is the president of a consulting firm that helps businesses
introduce new products into the marketplace. “It seems far
from chemistry, but really, I rely on my classroom training and
discipline in quantitative and qualitative analysis to help me
succeed in the business world,” he says. Outside of work,
Jon is busy with his family, including three young children, as
well as doing volunteer work for his church and St. Lawrence.
