NSF Grant Supports St. Lawrence Climate Research St. Lawrence received three NSF grants this year. A professor and student will use a $78,872 grant to travel—twice—to the Arctic’s Bering Sea Region and study the traditional ecological knowledge of the Siberian Yupik tribe.

New York Six Receives $1.5 Million Mellon Foundation Grant The New York Six Liberal Arts Consortium, which includes St. Lawrence University, has been awarded a $1.5 million grant by the Mellon Foundation to create the NY6 Mellon Academic Leadership Fellows Program, a three-year program to provide an intensive leadership experience for faculty in the humanities who aspire to academic leadership roles.

The Support and Care of Carefree Black Girls Sealina Marryshow ’22, president of Carefree Black Girls, wants students to know the club is a welcoming and supportive space for women of color and allies. This spring, they utilized campus resources to help address the mental health needs of their peers.

SLU Astronomers Attend Workshop at Green Bank Observatory For the first time since 2019, several members of the Physics Department attended an in-person workshop at the Green Bank Observatory in West Virginia, home of the largest fully steerable radio telescope in the world.

Tropical Ecology and Conservation Students Head to Ecuador Ten SLU students spent three weeks in Ecuador in June 2022 with Associate Professor Susan Willson learning about conservation issues facing the region.

Dr. Val Lehr Leads Summer Course in Ireland This summer, Dr. Val Lehr led St. Lawrence students during an off-campus study program in Ireland as they studied Irish history and geography, popular memory, memorialization, and the formation of national identity.

A Nose for Conservation As part of a six-week summer research project, Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology Kristine Hoffman, Julia Sirois ’23, and Newt, a labrador trained to detect several species of turtles, are scouring the Rhode Island landscape to find out how many of less common species of turtles are living there. Learn more about Newt on the St. Lawrence Twitter account.
