Memoriam: Frank D. Whalen
I am deeply sorry to share with you that Associate Professor Emeritus
of Psychology Frank D. Whalen passed away Tuesday morning, December
11, at United Helpers Nursing Home in Canton.
When he joined the faculty in 1969, Frank was a graduate of the
University of Notre Dame and Pennsylvania State University, and a
doctoral candidate at the University of Pittsburgh, which awarded
him the Ph.D. in 1970. Frank’s teaching experience included
positions at Washington and Jefferson College.
He found an academic home at St. Lawrence University, teaching psychology
courses, serving as a member of the counseling resource team, and
offering special expertise in the discipline of alcohol abuse counseling. His
work received recognition in 1987, when he received the Louis and
Frances Maslow Award as “a tireless worker, who gives enormously
of his time and energy, without fanfare and usually, except on this
occasion, without any public acknowledgement, to help St. Lawrence
students, especially those who at a given moment are most in need
of help,” according to the citation read at Convocation that
year.
Frank retired from teaching in 1997 and remained in Canton with
his wife Mildred, warmly respected for the quiet contributions they
made to the quality of life for all residents.
Ann and
I extend our deepest sympathies to Mildred, their children, family
and friends.
