Timeline of Significant Recent Events in Greek Life at St. Lawrence
Commission on Alternatives to the Greek System (CAGS) formed, of five faculty members.
CAGS issued a report to the faculty that included a number of recommendations, including "Recommendation 26," that no new Greek organizations be allowed to organize on campus, along with other recommendations.
Student life division implements the Reciprocal Relations Agreement, establishing a mutually agreed-upon "relationship" between Greek organizations and the University.
Following one of the statements in CAGS' "Recommendation 26," a committee is appointed to re-examine the Greek system; it is called the Recommendation 26 Committee.
The Recommendation 26 Committee issued its report, including recommendations to defer rush and pledging to the sophomore year, and others. The committee re-affirmed CAGS' recommendation that no new Greek houses, or houses who have lost University affiliation, be allowed to colonize.
Pi Beta Phi sorority (begun in 1914) disbanded due to declining membership.
Sigma Chi International closed the local chapter (1953-1998), due to violations of University and fraternity rules on hazing, alcohol and drug policies.
Sigma Alpha Epsilon National closed the local chapter (1919-1999), due to violations of membership recruitment (ghost pledging), hazing, alcohol and drug violations.
Following three years of violations of alcohol and drug policies resulting in sanctions, the local chapter of Sigma Pi surrendered its charter to the national organization.
Greek Engagement Project announced, to assess Greek life and recommend changes to strengthen the system at St. Lawrence.
The University closed Phi Sigma Kappa (1902-2004). The national had imposed a number of sanctions in 2003, with which St. Lawrence agreed, and the decision to close was based on review of the chapter's activities.
Beta Theta Pi (1879-2005) was suspended by the University, acting upon a recommendation of the national, citing "a pattern of poor judgment and leadership that has extended over a number of years." The decision included consideration of re-colonization in 2008.
The University closed Phi Kappa Sigma (1959-2006) and informed the national organization. Several violations were cited in the decision, which also noted "These events, however, are just the most recent in a pattern of poor judgment and leadership that has extended over a number of years."
