New SLU Scholarship
Honors Long-Time Coach Robert "Ax" Axtell
A new scholarship has been established at St. Lawrence University
honoring long-time ski coach and mentor to generations of students,
Robert "Ax" Axtell. Pledges from alumni to date for the
Robert "Ax" Axtell Scholarship exceed $500,000, with
more support expected in the coming months. Established by Class
of 1980 members Michael Ranger and Timothy Simpson, the scholarship
was announced during the St. Lawrence Carnival ski event in Lake

Mortensen '80 Nominated For Academy Award
Viggo Mortensen '80
has received his first nomination for an Academy Award, for Best
Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, for his portrayal of
a Russian mobster in Eastern Promises. Nominations were announced
January 22, with winners schedule to be announced February 24. Mortensen
also was nominated for his first Golden Globe Award this year, for
the same role, and for a Screen Actors Guild award. For more |

Seniors
Participate In U.N. Climate Change Conference
Shelly Martin '08, of Stowe, Vermont, and Kate Olsen '08, of Muncy,
Pennsylvania, participated in the the 13th Conference of Parties to
the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change which took
place in Bali in December. Martin and Olsen accompanied Assistant Professor
of Environmental Studies Jon Rosales as participants in the conference.

Men's
basketball won its seventh and eight straight games, beating RPI
and Vassar. Women's basketball lost to RPI, but rallied to down
Vassar Saturday. Women's hockey has now won five in a row after
beating RPI and Union. Men's hockey lost to Union and RPI. The
men's and women's track teams won the SLU Indoor Invitational.
