students suffered from depression last year, up from 10 percent in
2000, according to The American College Health Association. Mental
health professionals on college campuses expect the percentage to
rise again this year, but St. Lawrence University is addressing the
problem by participating in a national pilot project to improve screening

An exhibition of large-scale photographs
of the St. Lawrence River's Thousand Islands region, called "A
Floating World: Ian Coristine's Thousand Islands," will be in
St. Lawrence University's Richard F. Brush Art Gallery from May 14
to July 15.

Bernard Smith '01 was recently selected by Brandweek Magazine as
one of 10 "Marketers of the Next Generation," a list of "the
hottest marketers under the age of 40." Smith, head of marketing
and promotions for UA Marketing in New York, is the only individual

Director of the Higher Education Opportunity Program William Short was quoted
in a May 3 story in the Columbia Daily Spectator, an independent newspaper
affiliated with Columbia University, about HEOP. Short is president of the New
York State HEOP Professional Organization.

Athletics News
Men's
lacrosse beat RPI and Skidmore to capture the Liberty League
Championship and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.
The Saints, who will be playing int he tournament for the second
straight year, earned a first-round bye and will host defending national
champion Cortland on Saturday, May 12. Men's track finished second at the
state meet with a school record for points. The women's
track team
was fourth behind a school and meet record by Laura Clarke in the
3000 meter steeplechase. Dorothy Douglas '09 placed second at the IHSA
Nationals for the riding team and baseball closed
out the regular season by beating rival Clarkson four times in two
