Responses to Virginia Tech tragedy
The tragedy at Virginia Tech on April 16 evoked two messages from President Daniel F. Sullivan, and the campus plans a Vigil of Hope tonight, Monday, April 23 at 10 p.m., on the quad. President Sullivan's first message offered condolences and compassion to the victims and his second message reviewed St. Lawrence University's overall security premises. Both messages will remain on line and accessible from the President's homepage; St. Lawrence maintains an Emergency Preparedness Web page with in-depth information. |

St.
Lawrence in the News
President Daniel F. Sullivan made national news on April 19 with the publication of his editorial "Merit and Access" in the on-line newsletter Inside Higher Education. President Sullivan argues that colleges winning acclaim in shifts in strategies are doing more to help themselves in the competition for students than to help students who can't afford college. Director of Health and Counseling
Services Pat Ellis was quoted in an April 19 story in the Philadelphia
Inquirer, about what colleges may and may not do to screen
students for signs of mental illnesses, and what restrictions there
are regarding notification of parents and others.
Ellis was also
quoted in the April 6 edition of Psychiatric News, in an article
titled "Eight Colleges Collaborate to Improve
Depression Care." The article discussed a new screening program
beginning to be used at college health centers, including St. Lawrence's.

The Men's Lacrosse team extended its win streak to eight games
with a 15-12 win over Union. The Saints are ranked No. 10 in the
most recent NCAA Division III Lacrosse Poll. The Men's
and Women's Track Teams had strong performances at the Hamilton Invitational.
Men's Tennis placed third at the Liberty League Championships. More

New Reunion Bulletin Board feature: The Class of 1982 is piloting a new feature of the alumni community, my St. Lawrence. The 25th Reunion class is posting planning ideas and messages to one another in an effort to attract a record number of classmates to Reunion this June.
