St. Lawrence Athletics
Recreational and varsity skiing both have had place in St. Lawrence student life. The campus has been a favorite place for Nordic skiing--students still can step out of their residence halls and ski the golf course--and Alpine skiing at Titus Mountain or Whiteface Mountain is popular. The ski teams host their annual carnival in
Lake Placid.
Field hockey came to St. Lawrence by 1914, one of the first organized sports for women. For a review of the history of women's sports, see our magazine article Pioneers in Women's Sports at St. Lawrence.
Ice hockey, at left, on a flooded quad, made its first appearance in 1912. The photo at left is from 1925, on St. Lawrence's new outdoor rink. The women's and men's teams today draw thousands of fans to Appleton Arena and are nationally ranked competitors.
The canoe regatta began in 1928, on the Little River south of campus. Photo at right is taken in the Augsbury Natatorium, of a member of the varsity swimming and diving team.
Women's basketball was the first team sport played by St. Lawrence women; the women's team appears to have preceded the men's team.
Newly renovated Burkman Gymnasium is the home for the men's and women's basketball teams as well as the volleyball team.
