St.
Lawrence has many programs termed "interdisciplinary." This means that
different ways of approaching scholarly and social issues come together
around a theme. Memorial Hall is home to two such interdisciplinary
programs--Canadian studies and environmental
studies. As the US liberal
arts college located closest to the capital of another country (Ottawa,
Canada), we are uniquely poised to study the politics, culture, economy
and social structure of Canada.
Our environmental studies program was one of the first
such programs in the nation, bringing the research of scientists, social
scientists, writers, artists and others to consider issues of the world's
environment and to consider an integrated and coherent approach to environmental
problem-solving. Many courses focus on the study of rural environmental
issues so as to make the best use of the University's location.
