Mike Wieneke ’07, a government major from Plattsburgh, N.Y., continuously strives to be a better person while making St. Lawrence a better University.
Initially attracted to St. Lawrence because of its small size, Mike says, “When I visited campus, I felt that SLU offered me the chance to get involved in multiple activities and to develop relationships with my peers, the professors and the administrators.” True to his word, Mike is active on campus as a varsity athlete and a familiar face to students and faculty of St. Lawrence.
According to Mike, the two most meaningful experiences of his time at St. Lawrence are “being a member of the men’s crew team and serving as student delegate to the Board of Trustees.” Participating on the crew team has taught him “the importance of team dynamics and developing my ability to push myself mentally and physically,” he says. And as student delegate, Mike has “come to realize the importance of student voice in the continued success and growth of the University,” he says.
Academically, Mike has been most influenced by the relationship he has developed with his sophomore advisor, Joe Kling, professor of government. “Having Professor Kling both as an advisor and a teacher gave me the opportunity to develop and refine my abilities to express comprehensive and analytical thoughts,” Mike says.
As a senior, Mike is working on obtaining his New York Real Estate Salesperson license. He says, “I hope to pursue a career in commercial real estate after graduation.”
