Kindness and beauty initially attracted Somdeep Sen ’07, a native of Calcutta, India, and graduate of of La Martiniere for Boys, to St. Lawrence University. He says, “I liked how beautiful the campus was and how incredibly nice people were on the phone when I called from India.” Somdeep says he enjoys most about St. Lawrence “the support given to me and the opportunities that the University has provided me.” Through St. Lawrence funding, Somdeep, a government major, has been able to “study, work, research and travel in 10 countries over the last two years.”
His most “cherished experiences” have been traveling to Korea, Mexico, the Czech Republic and Finland, but he is also highly active on campus. “I have enjoyed each and every club and organization I have been a part of,” he says, including the Association for Campus Entertainment (ACE), Model UN, South Asia Bollywood and Holiday Association (SABHA), and the political science honorary Pi Sigma Alpha. “The most challenging was by far being president of ACE. It taught me a lot about working with others and about leadership,” he says.
Somdeep spent the summer traveling alone through India on a St. Lawrence travel research grant, “researching domestic violence in India and Bangladesh.” When asked where he sees himself in 10 years, Somdeep answered, “I hope to have become a renowned journalist and researcher specializing in South and Central Asia and the Middle East, and also able to speak six languages.” Somdeep already speaks English, Bengali and Hindi; he intends to learn Russian, Arabic and German.
