For
Tuoc Phan ’07, St. Lawrence is her home away
from home. Tuoc,
who is from Hue, Vietnam, says that her decision to attend St. Lawrence
was based on a number of different things. “I wanted
to go to a school where everyone knows each other,” she
says. “I also wanted to find a school where I
could easily get involved with different groups on campus. St.
Lawrence provided all of this for me.”
A double major in economics and mathematics,
Tuoc has found that she can broaden her horizons academically at
St. Lawrence. “I can
focus on my major while taking courses in different subject areas as well.” Along
with her studies, Tuoc keeps busy working in the Owen D. Young Library and
in Alumni Parent and Programs, and has found that getting involved on
campus is easy at St. Lawrence. “Living on campus makes life easier
for students and gives them more opportunities to get involved with St. Lawrence.”
Last summer, Tuoc took advantage of the summer fellowships St. Lawrence
offers and began research on Japanese gender roles. She
looked at traditional values versus modernization and how it has affected
Japanese women. After receiving money from the Asian Studies Initiative, Tuoc
went to Japan in the middle
of July and spent over a month there living with a host family and
doing more hands-on research. “The trip gave me the chance
to talk with people and see first hand the different roles in society,” she
says.
