With two mathematics professors for parents, Dennis Lock didn’t fall too far from the family tree.
It’s not surprising that Lock ’08, a native of Canton, N.Y., and graduate of Hugh C. Williams High School, has wanted to be a mathematics major for as long as he can remember. He says, “It’s what I have always been best at, and I want to be good at my job.” He comes by his interest naturally; his parents, Professors Robin Lock and. Patti Frazer Lock, both teach in the St. Lawrence University mathematics department. Robin Lock specializes in statistics, while Patti Lock is an internationally recognized authority on the teaching of calculus.
Unfortunately, neither of the two is whom he considers to be his favorite professor. Lock laughed, “That’s hard for me to say given my position, but I guess I’ll go with Michael Schuckers.” One of Schuckers’s interests is biometrics.
Lock expresses his genuine love for mathematics, but he also mentions some great new opportunities for all students in the department. “One of the best tools we have right now is the Quantitative Resource Center,” he says. “It’s great that students can go in and get help on their assignments just as they would if they were writing a paper in another discipline.”
As a senior, Lock is hoping to take his mathematics skills to the next level, which is graduate school in statistics. He hopes to attend North Carolina State University in the fall. Lock is also the president and captain of the St. Lawrence University Ultimate Frisbee team. "They call me the man no one can cover!" he claims.
