“What drew me to St. Lawrence is the same reason why I love this place – the community,” says Adam Kyamatare ’09. Adam hails from Kigali, Rwanda, a country marred by genocide and political instability in the 1990s. A fresh graduate of Waterford Kamhlaba United World College in southern Africa, he was concerned that assimilating into American culture would be difficult at first.
But his fears quickly dissipated as the St. Lawrence community welcomed him with open arms. “
SLU works individually with each student and helps students with any problems that arise,” he notes.
Kyamatare, a
government major, was recently elected a
student delegate to the Board of Trustees at St. Lawrence. “To be allowed the honor of being the student’s voice on the board is truly humbling,” he says. “It is with great care that I represent the students.” He faces the task of meeting with the St. Lawrence trustees when they discuss issues of importance to the student body.
In addition to his responsibilities on the Board, Kyamatare is an
Orientation leader and a member of the
African Student Union.
“I can say unequivocally that I have never regretted my decision to join the St. Lawrence community,” Kyamatare says as he enters his senior year of college. “
This school has given me so many opportunities and I have made friends and connections that I know will last a lifetime.”
