From Minnesota to France via Hong Kong: Kaia Klockeman ’06 sees
the world.
"I thought, ‘If somebody I know from my hometown
of Northfield, Minn., likes St. Lawrence, so will I,'" says
Kaia Klockeman '06, who learned about St. Lawrence from Jessie Stepanek
'04, a former member of Kaia's high school choir.
"St. Lawrence may be small," Kaia says, "but I noticed
immediately how many opportunities there are: clubs to join, positions to hold,
research opportunities, international study, and more. The list is almost endless.
The only restriction is the amount of free time you have outside of classes."
During
the fall 2005 semester, Kaia is studying on St.
Lawrence's program in France. She also joined a research trip to Hong Kong
during the 2004 Winter Break. Her international study is well grounded
in her economics major
and French minor; Kaia received a 2004 University Fellowship,
spending the summer on campus working one-on-one with an economics
professor to research "Understanding
the Process and Results of Comparing the Countries of the World on the Basis
of Economic Development."
And about that free time outside of class? Kaia’s
list is almost as endless as the possibilities she describes: Singing Sinners (a
woman’s
a capella group for which she has been business director), Laurentian Singers (the
University mixed chorus), Student Judiciary Board Justice, student
delegate to the Alumni Council, Community Assistant in the
residence halls, Omicron
Delta Kappa (ODK) leadership, service and scholarship honorary.
One special activity has been participating in leadership conferences
hosted by Omicron Delta Kappa. "I really enjoy learning different
ways of doing things, especially when it relates to being a better
leader, and better person in general," she says. "These conferences
were perfect for that."
