Eve Gatawa '08
Eve Gatawa ’08 of Zimbabwe got the international education
she sought. When Eve began looking for colleges, an educational advisor
from her hometown of Harare suggested St. Lawrence. The more
she found out about the small liberal arts school tucked away between
an international border and the Adirondack Mountains,
the more she liked it. “I knew I would be near Canada
and would be able to travel and possibly go abroad,” she says.
After
making St Lawrence her home, Eve adds, “I really like the small
community. I
walk everywhere and I see someone I know.” After spending a year
in the First-Year Program, Eve has a lot of good things to say about her
first-year experience at St. Lawrence. “It was a great way
to begin college,” she says. “It allowed me to create
and build great relationships with the other students in my FYP and my advisors.”
After
only being here a little over a year, Eve has embarked on the St.
Lawrence tradition by taking advantage of all the opportunities placed
in front of her. An economics major
and a math and French minor, Eve received a University Fellowship in
the summer of 2005 to research and analyze the Free Trade Agreement
in Southern Africa under the mentorship of her economics advisor,
Bob Blewett.
She also plans on taking full advantage of St. Lawrence’s
abroad program by going to France in the fall of 2006. Eve
keeps busy with her many activities, which includes being a community
assistant, a member of Model U.N., the Investment Club, the
African Students Union, the Gospel Choir, and volunteering at
the local day care center. Eve is also a community mentor, which
has given her the opportunity to do independent research about diversity
on campus and how it can be improved.
