Jason
DeRosa is starving. He has just returned from a weekend rock climbing
trip with St. Lawrence’s Outdoor Program, an excursion that
left him ready to devour a Pub omelet with veggies and salsa, hash
browns and a carton of Silk soy milk.
“I
would have rock climbed more, if I was starting over at St. Lawrence,” says
DeRosa, an English and government double major. “I wish I had time to
fully capitalize on the Outdoor Program.”
DeRosa has
made the most of St. Lawrence by anybody’s standards. He has worked at
the Munn Writing Center for four years, which he cites as
one of his most rewarding experiences, and he has participated in
two off-campus programs, the Adirondack Semester and the Washington Semester,
both of which shaped his desire to study environmental law. He has
also played a crucial role in many on-campus programs, among them
the Environmental Action Organization and the Association for Campus
Entertainment.
He has written for the student newspaper and one of its literary
magazines. And he still maintains a solid position on the Dean’s List each semester.
This fall,
DeRosa embarked on yet another new position: student delegate to
the Board
of Trustees. He attends each trustees meeting and reports back
to the students; he also takes student concerns and accomplishments
to the trustees.
After graduation in May, DeRosa hopes to involve
himself in a new set of commitments. He plans on returning to Washington
D.C. to work for an environmental research organization for a year,
before applying to law school--ideally Georgetown, despite the
fact that rock climbing in that area is sparse.
“I think I’m ready for the next step professionally,”
he says.
