Sociology major Melina Cruz always liked the idea of attending
a smaller college or university, and when an admissions counselor
from St. Lawrence visited her high school, she knew she had to find
out more. She made plans to visit St. Lawrence, and after staying
with students on campus, she knew St. Lawrence was where she wanted
to be.
Since joining the Laurentian community, Melina has been active with
the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) and the College
Science and Technology Entry Program (C-STEP). She is also
the vice president of the Class of 2006.
“I really wanted to become more involved and get to know different
people, groups and organizations on campus,” she says. On
top of the fundraising and other senior-year events she is helping
with, she is focused on making Senior Week fun for everyone.
Melina sings in both the Laurentian Singers and the Singing
Sinners. She is also a founding member of the Gospel Choir. “One
of my favorite things about St. Lawrence is that if you’re
interested in doing something on campus and there isn’t a group
already doing it, you can start it yourself,” she says.
Melina has studied in Trinidad and
Thailand while at St. Lawrence. “I
met so many amazing people on these trips that I may not have ever
known otherwise,” she says. “St. Lawrence gives students
so many opportunities to do different things. That’s why
I love it.”
