James Albrittain '06, of Manchester, VT, a psychology major,
found international travel to fit perfectly within his academic plan.
Jimmy
traveled to Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta in China to
conduct a research project in January 2005, working with Professor of Government Alan
Draper. The group researched the general topic "Change at Warp Speed: The
Political, Economic, and Environmental Transformation of the Pearl River Delta," and
each student involved also researched specific topics of their own interest.
They were hosted by the American-Hong Kong Center and traveled throughout the
region. (See our Web story on other such projects.)
Such interdisciplinary study is typical at St. Lawrence,
where students from many departments can find benefits of study in
other areas. And the benefits are both cerebral and practical.
Not only do students discover new ways of thinking about a subject,
they also, as Jimmy says “leave class every day with some new
information that makes everything else suddenly make sense. I
can see immediately how to use new information.”
