For Tim Akers, the name of the game is involvement. And
his breadth of involvement has defined his experience at St. Lawrence. He’s
been a captain of the swim team and the team’s representative
to the Student Athletic Advisory Council (SAAC); he’s
been a student delegate to the Alumni Council; and he’s
worked in the admissions office.
Through his involvement,
Akers, a psychology major from Williamsville,
N.Y., has discovered what a supportive environment St. Lawrence
provides. He explains, “This year I had to end my swim season early
for medical reasons. The team has helped me cope by being constantly uplifting. The
entire athletic department has been very helpful; with their encouragement
I have worked with them on SAAC projects, worked at games, interned in
the department, and even played squash with the coaches and the director
of athletics.”
Akers began his “career” in admissions as
a tour guide. Now
he’s a student assistant to one of the admissions staff. “I’ve
enjoyed this job so much I’m considering college admissions as a ‘real’ career path,” he
says. “I’ve been allowed to tackle many new challenges.” A
challenge he’d like to undertake eventually is study toward a master’s
degree in sports administration.
The best thing about St. Lawrence, he adds, is “the people. I’m
constantly amazed by how friendly people are, doing
simple things like holding doors or writing ‘thank you’ on
the order forms at the pub. It is such a welcoming campus—that’s
part of its tradition.”
